Stanford inspired me to make education fun and interesting for all ages and walks of life
“I was nine years older than my brother, who had learning disabilities. Our family tried many strategies to help him learn, and I think that is where my passion for education started.
“After high school, I attended UCLA, where I was a pledged Alpha Phi. I was ecstatic to receive an offer to study art and education at Stanford after World War II when many girls were marrying and establishing their families.
“After graduating from Stanford, I taught third grade. I also volunteered with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts at our local elementary school. Because of my earlier years helping my little brother to learn, I had a heart for children with learning challenges. So I recorded readings for the blind, planned activities for underprivileged children and organized youth education programs. I also enjoyed working with adults and creating things, which led me to organize stitchery groups.

Stanford and my husband, Bill, helped me to appreciate the value of education, and I trust that many lives were impacted through me.
“My advice to my fellow alumni is to keep education fun and useful, and to keep on learning. Happy 100th birthday, GSE.”
